Apple to Purge Low-Quality Apps From the App Store

Apple is tightening its grip on the App Store ecosystem by warning developers that underperforming applications in saturated categories may face removal. The company’s latest App Review Guidelines, released in tandem with the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), signal a shift from merely rejecting new submissions to potentially purging existing software that fails to maintain relevance.

Apple says it may remove some apps from the App Store if they don’t attract users

The tech giant explicitly stated that it may pull apps from the storefront if they remain stagnant, lack updates, or fail to gain traction with customers. This policy targets software that provides no “meaningfully different or improved” experience compared to established market leaders.

Expanding the “Low-Quality” Criteria

Historically, Apple discouraged developers from flooding the store with repetitive content. Previous guidelines famously cited an overabundance of “fart, burp, flashlight, fortune telling, dating, drinking games, and Kama Sutra” apps. The updated policy expands this scope significantly:

  • New categories added: The list now includes wallpaper apps, simple timers, and sound effects.
  • Stricter scrutiny: Developers who repeatedly submit “low-quality,” “mediocre,” or “low-effort” applications face the risk of losing their Apple Developer Program access entirely.
  • Discovery focus: By pruning the store of clutter, Apple aims to improve the visibility of high-quality apps and support developers who invest in meaningful user experiences.

A Push for Quality and Discovery

This policy update aligns with broader efforts announced at WWDC to refine app discovery. Apple is introducing personalized recommendations and new merchandising tools designed to help developers re-engage users and grow their businesses. By removing apps that offer little value, the company intends to clear the path for more innovative software to reach users.

According to Apple, developers will not be caught off guard by these removals. Through the App Store Improvements process, the company provides notice to creators when their software is outdated or failing to record downloads. This window allows developers to update or improve their products before they face the risk of being removed from the marketplace.
