YouTube Pauses Livestream Ads During High Engagement
YouTube is adjusting its advertising strategy for livestreams to prioritize viewer experience during critical moments of broadcast. The platform will now automatically suppress advertisements when it detects peak chat engagement, ensuring that high-energy interactions remain uninterrupted by commercial breaks.

This update, announced by the company this week, aims to “protect that collective vibe” that occurs when audiences are most active. By removing ad interruptions during these spikes, the platform seeks to help creators sustain the momentum of their broadcasts.
Rewarding Audience Support
Beyond algorithmic pauses, the platform is introducing direct benefits for viewers who interact with creators financially. Users who utilize the following tools will now receive an immediate, ad-free window following their purchase:
- Super Chat: Payments made to highlight specific messages in the chat feed.
- Super Stickers: Purchased digital images that make user messages stand out.
- Gifts: Virtual items sent to creators to show appreciation.
Expanding Creator Tools and Global Reach
The changes arrive alongside a broader expansion of monetization and technical features for live creators. YouTube is rolling out its gifting feature to more regions, including Canada, Korea, Indonesia, Thailand, Australia, and New Zealand. Furthermore, viewers on mobile devices can now send GIFs during horizontal livestreams, a feature previously limited to vertical formats.
Technical flexibility is also a priority in this update. Creators can now broadcast in both vertical and horizontal formats simultaneously, with all viewers participating in a single, unified chat room. This shift is particularly relevant as data shows that over 30% of live watch time in the U.S. originated from connected TVs in 2025.
These platform adjustments follow a recent pricing update for YouTube Premium in the United States. The individual subscription plan rose from $13.99 to $15.99 per month, while the family plan increased from $22.99 to $26.99 per month.
