Microsoft Reaches First US Union Contract With ZeniMax Staff
Microsoft has reached a tentative contract agreement with unionized quality assurance testers at ZeniMax, marking a significant milestone as the company’s first-ever labor contract in the United States. The deal follows two years of negotiations between the tech giant and the unionized staff.

The approximately 300 QA testers, organized through the Communications Workers of America (CWA), have been working toward this agreement since they first formed their union shortly after Microsoft’s acquisition of ZeniMax in 2021.
Key Terms of the Agreement
The proposed contract, which members are set to vote on during a ratification process scheduled for June 20, includes several notable provisions:
- Salary Increase: A 13.5% pay raise for all employees, effective July 1.
- AI Integration: Formal inclusion of the previously announced guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the workplace.
Page Branson, a QA tester and member of the union bargaining committee, described the deal as a “monumental victory for all current video game workers and for those that come after.”
Growing Labor Influence at Microsoft
While the ZeniMax QA team pioneered unionization efforts within the gaming division of Microsoft, the movement has since expanded. According to the CWA, the organization now represents more than 2,000 Microsoft video game employees across various departments, signaling a broader shift in labor relations within the gaming industry.
