Backbone has officially expanded its hardware lineup with the launch of the Backbone Pro. Moving beyond the design of its predecessor, the Backbone One, this new model introduces Bluetooth connectivity and a suite of premium features tailored for both iOS and Android users.
The core shift in the Pro model is its independence; it functions as a standalone wireless controller. This allows users to engage with cloud gaming services like Xbox Game Pass on a television and transition seamlessly to mobile play by simply docking their phone into the device. According to founder Maneet Khaira, the design philosophy focuses on removing friction: “Our thought is, gaming should be a lot more straightforward. It needs to be really simple and work more like AirPods when you connect to screens.”
Engineering and Iteration
To achieve the ergonomics of the Pro, the company utilized rapid prototyping techniques similar to those used by Meta during the development of the Quest headset. The development process involved 3D-printing more than 9,000 individual parts to refine the controller’s feel and responsiveness.

This capital support underscores the company’s aggressive strategy to capture the expanding mobile gaming market as cloud subscription services gain traction.
The device is priced at $169.99. While this positions it against dedicated handhelds like a refurbished Nintendo Switch Lite, the company is targeting serious players who prioritize cross-device functionality. For those who do not require the wireless or cross-platform features, the original Backbone One remains available at a lower price point of $99.99.
