Substack Launches ‘Reply Rules’ to Automate Comment Moderation

CONTEUDO:

Substack is granting writers more authority over their community discourse with the introduction of “Reply Rules,” a feature unveiled this Wednesday that automates the moderation of reader interactions. The tool allows creators to define specific parameters for engagement across posts, Notes, and Chat.

By establishing these guidelines, authors can curate the tone of their comment sections without manually reviewing every entry. The system is designed to learn from user behavior; for instance, if a creator consistently hides certain types of replies, the algorithm will begin to filter out similar content automatically. While these comments are suppressed, they remain accessible to the creator, who retains the final decision to unhide any interaction at their discretion.

Customizing Community Standards

The flexibility of the feature allows for a wide range of applications, from strictly practical to creative. Creators can utilize these rules to:

  • Eliminate spam or automated “AI slop.”
  • Filter out profanity or specific offensive language.
  • Enforce stylistic constraints, such as requiring responses to follow a specific format like haikus.

Currently, the feature is available to all publications operating in English. Substack maintains its longstanding philosophy of decentralized moderation, which places the responsibility of community policing directly in the hands of the writers. This new tool complements existing capabilities, such as the ability to ban users, delete individual comments, or lock threads entirely.

Addressing Platform Challenges

The move arrives amid ongoing scrutiny regarding the platform’s content policies. Critics have frequently pointed to the presence of far-right newsletters, arguing that the company’s hands-off approach fosters harmful rhetoric. In its announcement, Substack defended its strategy, emphasizing a commitment to supporting a variety of cultures online.

The company stated, “Since its founding, Substack has sought to create the best possible conditions for cultures of many varieties to flourish online. Achieving this often involves difficult trade-offs, but alongside our core model — where we only earn when writers, artists, journalists, musicians, and others earn — we’ve managed to carve out a unique path relative to other platforms.”

This update is part of a broader expansion for the platform this year. Recent additions include a built-in recording studio for video production and a dedicated TV app, allowing subscribers to consume video content and livestreams directly on their televisions.
