Nintendo has officially paused U.S. preorders for the highly anticipated Switch 2 console, citing the need to evaluate the impact of newly announced federal trade tariffs. The decision follows a volatile week for the gaming giant, which had originally scheduled the preorder window to open on April 9.
The uncertainty stems from a recent announcement by President Donald Trump regarding sweeping tariffs on imported goods. These measures were introduced shortly after Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2, which carries a confirmed launch price of $450 and a release date of June 5.
Supply Chain and Tariff Challenges
Doug Bowser, president of Nintendo of America, confirmed that the company’s initial pricing strategy for the Switch 2 did not account for these sudden trade shifts, as reported by Wired. The hardware relies on a complex supply chain spanning several nations, each now facing different tariff tiers under the proposed plan:
- China: Subject to 54% tariffs.
- Cambodia: Subject to 49% tariffs.
- Vietnam: Subject to 46% tariffs.
