Social Gaming Giant Rec Room to Shut Down June 1

Rec Room, the social gaming platform that once commanded a $3.5 billion valuation, is officially closing its doors. The company confirmed on Monday that it will pull the plug on its virtual services on June 1, marking the end of a platform that served as a digital hub for millions.

Social gaming platform Rec Room, once valued at $3.5B, is shutting down

The announcement signals a major shift for a service that gained immense traction during the pandemic. Since its inception in 2016 by co-founders Nick Fajt and Cameron Brown, the platform grew into a massive ecosystem, amassing over 150 million registered players who utilized the space for virtual social interaction and game creation.

Financial Hurdles and Market Shifts

Despite its popularity, the business model proved unsustainable. The company faced mounting operational costs that consistently outpaced its revenue growth. Even with the introduction of advanced features, such as the Maker AI tool designed to assist users in building content, the platform failed to secure a viable path to long-term financial stability.

The company acknowledged these challenges in its public statement, citing a combination of external pressures:

  • Shifting dynamics within the virtual reality (VR) market.
  • Broader economic headwinds currently affecting the gaming industry.
  • An inability to align rising infrastructure costs with monetization goals.

“We spent a long time trying to find a way to make the numbers work,” the company stated. “But with the recent shift in the VR market, along with broader headwinds in gaming, the path to profitability has gotten tough enough that we’ve made the difficult decision to shut things down.”

Immediate Impacts on Users

The shutdown process begins immediately. The platform has implemented several restrictions as it prepares for the final closure:

  • New account registrations are now disabled.
  • Friend requests are no longer being processed.
  • Creators are prohibited from sharing new monetized content.

All virtual worlds and services hosted by Rec Room will remain accessible only until 12 p.m. PT on June 1, at which point the servers will be taken offline permanently. This closure follows a series of internal struggles, including significant layoffs earlier this year, as the leadership team attempted to navigate the company’s financial decline.
