Roblox Launches Cube: AI-Powered 3D Model Generator

Roblox has officially debuted “Cube,” its inaugural generative AI model designed to streamline the creation of 3D objects. By allowing users to generate complex meshes from simple text prompts, the company aims to significantly reduce the technical barriers for developers building within its ecosystem.

The model, which was first teased during the company’s annual developer conference last year, will be available to creators later this week. A demonstration of the technology is scheduled for this afternoon at the Game Developers Conference (GDC).

From Text Prompts to 3D Meshes

The core of the Cube launch is its beta-stage mesh generation tool. Creators can input specific descriptions—such as “generate an orange racing car with black stripes”—and the AI will produce a corresponding 3D representation. Once generated, these items remain fully editable within Roblox Studio, allowing for further refinement.

Beyond the internal platform tools, Roblox has opted to release an open-source version of Cube. This move allows external developers to integrate the model into their own workflows, train it using custom datasets, or develop specialized plug-ins tailored to specific project requirements.

Expansion of AI Capabilities

Cube is part of a broader push to integrate generative AI across the Roblox platform. The company confirmed that three additional tools are slated for release in the coming months:

  • Text Generation: Enables developers to implement AI-driven features, such as interactive conversations with non-player characters (NPCs).
  • Text-to-Speech: Allows for dynamic narration, spoken captions, and voiced NPC dialogue.
  • Speech-to-Text: Facilitates voice-controlled gameplay, enabling players to issue movement or action commands through voice.

Looking further ahead, Roblox plans to expand these capabilities to include “scene generation,” which would allow users to prompt the creation of entire environments, such as forests, and manipulate variables like seasonal foliage changes. Nick Tornow, vice president of engineering at Roblox, noted that the ultimate objective is “4D creation,” defined as the interaction between objects, environments, and people.

Industry Context and Concerns

While the introduction of Cube aims to empower indie developers to scale their projects, the integration of generative AI in gaming remains a contentious topic. Recent data from the GDC State of the Game Industry report reveals that 30% of developers believe AI is having a negative impact on the sector. Furthermore, a CVL Economics study estimates that approximately 13.4% of gaming industry roles could be affected or replaced by AI by 2026.

Despite these industry-wide anxieties, Roblox continues to invest heavily in its AI roadmap, following in the footsteps of other major industry players like Tencent, which recently released its own open-source 3D generation model.
