Google AI Studio Now Lets Anyone Build Android Apps

Google has unveiled a significant shift in mobile software production, introducing native Android app creation capabilities directly within its web-based Google AI Studio. Announced Tuesday at Google IO 2026, the tool drastically reduces the development lifecycle, turning a process that typically requires weeks of setup and manual coding into a matter of minutes.

This initiative aims to lower the barrier to entry for app creation, catering to everyone from first-time developers to experienced professionals looking to prototype ideas rapidly. By enabling users to “vibe-code” Android applications via a browser, Google is positioning itself to compete with AI-centric development platforms like Replit, Cursor, and Claude Code.

Technical Capabilities and Workflow

The system leverages the Kotlin programming language and the Jetpack Compose toolkit. According to the company, these AI-generated apps support integration with core hardware sensors, including Bluetooth, GPS, and NFC.

The current workflow for building and testing includes:

• Previewing: Developers can interact with their app in real-time using an embedded Android Emulator within the web browser.
• Testing: Apps can be installed on physical Android devices via USB using the Android Debug Bridge (adb).
• Deployment: For more advanced iteration, AI Studio can automatically package the app and upload it to an internal testing track within the Google Play Console.
• Scaling: Creators can export their projects as zip files to GitHub for further development in the desktop-based Android Studio.

While the feature is robust, current creations are limited to personal use, as public publishing features remain on the company’s future roadmap. Future updates are expected to include Firebase integration and the ability to share apps directly with friends and family.

AI-Driven Discovery

Beyond the creation phase, Google is integrating Gemini AI into the Play Store to assist consumers in finding new applications. A new “Ask Play” overlay will allow users to discover software through natural language conversations.

Additionally, Gemini will begin surfacing apps directly within user conversations across web and mobile platforms. Later this year, this integration will expand to include over 450,000 movies and TV shows, providing direct links to streaming content within specific Android apps.

By withholding the announcement of these native creation tools until the start of the conference, Google signaled that the integration of AI into practical, real-world development is a primary focus for the company’s ecosystem moving forward.
