Google Launches Universal Cart to Centralize Online Shopping

Google is shifting its AI strategy from passive search to active commerce, unveiling “Universal Cart” at its I/O conference this week. This new agentic hub is designed to consolidate a user’s shopping journey, allowing individuals to track products, monitor price fluctuations, and manage items across various Google services, including Search, Gemini, YouTube, and Gmail.

Intelligent Commerce Features

Beyond simple aggregation, the system leverages AI to assist with complex purchasing decisions. For instance, if a user is building a custom PC, the tool can analyze components from different retailers to flag potential hardware incompatibilities and suggest better alternatives. Additionally, for users integrated with Google Wallet, the platform can identify hidden savings and maximize reward points.

Agent Payments Protocol (AP2)

Perhaps the most significant development is the update to the Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). This infrastructure allows AI agents to execute payments on behalf of the user within strict, pre-defined constraints. Users can establish specific guardrails, such as:

  • Preferred brands and product types.
  • Clear spending limits.
  • Automated purchase triggers when conditions are met.

Google intends to integrate this technology directly into its own product ecosystem in the coming months. The system utilizes a transparent, encrypted link between the buyer, the merchant, and the payment processor, creating a tamper-proof audit trail for future reference, such as returns or disputes.

Availability and Expansion

Universal Cart is currently rolling out in the United States, with plans to integrate into the Gemini app later this summer, followed by YouTube and Gmail. Furthermore, Google is expanding its Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)—the open standard that powers these experiences—to include new categories such as food delivery and hotels. International expansion is also on the horizon, with Canada and Australia slated to receive these features in the coming months, followed by the United Kingdom.
