India’s PC Market Hits Record 15.9M Units in 2025

India’s personal computer sector reached an unprecedented milestone in 2025, with total shipments climbing to 15.9 million units. This 10.2% year-over-year growth pushed the country’s performance beyond the previous demand peaks observed during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to fresh data from IDC.

The surge marks the first time annual shipments in the region have exceeded the 15-million-unit threshold. This expansion is largely attributed to a massive wave of first-time users who entered the market during pandemic-era lockdowns and are now transitioning to newer hardware.

Market Drivers and Segmentation

Bharath Shenoy, a research manager at IDC, noted that the expansion of the user base is being bolstered by broader digitization efforts, startup growth, and improved device availability in smaller cities. Currently, India’s contribution to the global PC market has grown to 5.6%, up significantly from 3.3% in 2020.

  • Commercial vs. Consumer: Business purchases accounted for 52.9% of the total, driven partly by a Windows refresh cycle and replacements within small-to-medium enterprises. Consumers represented the remaining 47.1%.
  • Vendor Landscape: HP, Lenovo, Dell, Acer, and Asus maintained the top positions.
  • Apple’s Position: Macs held 5.6% of the Indian notebook market in 2025. This remains well below the global average of 11-12% and the U.S. market, where Apple commands roughly 20%.

Future Outlook and AI Integration

While premium laptops priced above $1,000 saw an 8.2% annual increase, AI-enabled features are only just beginning to influence buyer behavior. Enterprises are shifting toward AI-ready hardware as prices align with traditional premium models, and content creators are showing increased interest as digital media consumption rises.

Looking ahead, the market faces potential short-term challenges. IDC projects a possible 5% decline in shipments for 2026 due to component shortages and rising prices. However, with PC penetration in India still estimated between 17% and 20%, analysts expect the region to remain more resilient than global markets. Stability is anticipated to return by 2027 as the current pressure on supply and demand levels off.

Apple, which did not provide a comment, is expected to leverage its new MacBook Neo to drive further consumer adoption, while simultaneously attempting to increase its footprint in the commercial sector.
