Instagram Launches Instants: Ephemeral Photos for Friends

Meta is rolling out a global update to Instagram dubbed “Instants,” a feature centered on raw, disappearing photography. The tool encourages users to share candid snapshots with close friends or mutual followers, prioritizing spontaneous interaction over the platform’s traditional polished aesthetic.

The functionality, which officially launched on Wednesday, draws clear inspiration from the ephemeral nature of Snapchat and the unedited focus of platforms like BeReal and Locket. By restricting the user experience, Instagram aims to pivot back toward casual, private social sharing.

How Instants Works

To capture an Instant, users must access the in-app camera directly through the mini photo stack located in the bottom right corner of their Instagram inbox. The system enforces specific constraints to maintain authenticity:

• No editing: Users cannot upload photos from their camera roll; all content must be captured in real-time.
• Limited modification: While text overlays are permitted, no further filtering or editing tools are available.
• Privacy protections: Recipients are blocked from taking screenshots or screen recordings of shared Instants.
• Disappearing content: Shared photos remain viewable once by the recipient and expire after 24 hours.

Management and Archiving

While the photos vanish from the active chat, Instagram stores them in a private archive accessible to the sender for up to one year. Users have the option to compile these archived images into a recap to be shared via Instagram Stories. If a user shares an Instant by mistake, they can select the “undo” button to delete it from the archive, effectively unsending it to any recipient who has not yet opened the message.

For those who prefer to curate their inbox experience, Instagram allows users to disable incoming Instants by holding down the photo stack and swiping right. Standard blocking and muting controls also apply to the feature.

Strategic Shift for Instagram

The introduction of Instants signals an attempt to recapture the intimate, friend-to-friend roots of the platform, which has increasingly become dominated by commercial content and influencer-driven media. Beyond the in-app feature, Meta is currently testing a standalone version of the Instants experience in specific markets, including Italy and Spain.

Industry analysts suggest the timing may be challenging. With the novelty of platforms like BeReal waning in popularity, and many users already utilizing Instagram Stories for informal updates, it remains to be seen if the audience will adopt a dedicated feature for low-pressure photo sharing.
