YouTube Tests Multiplayer Features in Playables Games

YouTube is expanding the functionality of its “Playables” collection by introducing real-time multiplayer support. The platform is currently testing the feature with a handful of titles, allowing users to compete or collaborate directly within the app.

YouTube is testing multiplayer mini-games

According to the company, the test focuses on select games from its existing catalog. Among the titles confirmed to support this new multiplayer mode are Ludo Club and Magic Tiles 3. In a statement, YouTube noted, “Multiplayer on Playables lets you play games in real-time with other users.”

Growing the Playables Catalog

The introduction of multiplayer marks the latest development for Playables, which has been in testing on both the YouTube website and mobile app for approximately one year. Initially restricted to Premium subscribers, the service expanded its reach this past May, making the entire library accessible to all users for free.

The platform’s gaming portfolio has expanded significantly during this period. Currently, users can access over 130 titles spanning various genres, including:

  • Action and Arcade
  • Brain & Puzzle
  • Trivia & Word
  • Racing, Simulation, and Sports

Platform Engagement Strategies

YouTube is leveraging these lightweight mini-games as a core strategy to increase user retention and time spent on the platform. This approach mirrors broader industry trends, as other major digital services seek to diversify beyond their primary functions.

Companies such as Netflix and LinkedIn have also integrated gaming into their ecosystems, aiming to keep users engaged on their platforms through interactive experiences that extend beyond video streaming or professional networking.
