Google Photos is introducing a new AI-powered tool designed to transform personal image libraries into a curated digital wardrobe. The update, announced on Wednesday, allows users to catalog their clothing and accessories, experiment with outfit combinations, and preview how items look through a virtual try-on feature.
The functionality draws clear parallels to the iconic automated closet seen in the 1995 film Clueless, where the protagonist, Cher, navigated her ensembles via a digital interface. By leveraging machine learning, Google aims to democratize this concept, moving beyond the luxury depiction of the original cinematic inspiration.
How the Digital Closet Works
The system automatically scans your existing Google Photos library to identify clothing items. Once detected, the app organizes these pieces into categories, including:
- Tops and bottoms
- Jewelry and accessories
- Footwear and outer layers
Users can then mix and match these items to build outfits. These creations can be saved to digital moodboards tailored for specific scenarios, such as travel itineraries, work attire, or social events, and shared directly with friends.
Market Context and Availability
While the AI performs the heavy lifting by isolating items from your photos, the quality of the virtual closet will likely depend on the source material. High-quality, well-lit images of clothing will yield the most accurate results, suggesting that users may still find value in manually curating their item photos.
This new feature will enter a competitive market currently occupied by specialized apps such as Acloset, Combyne, Pureple, Whering, and Alta. The fashion industry has long explored digital wardrobe solutions, and Google is positioning its AI integration as a more accessible alternative.
The feature is scheduled for release later this summer. It will debut first on Android devices before expanding to iOS, where it will be accessible via the “Collections” tab.
