Bethesda Game Studios Workers Form Wall-to-Wall Union

Employees at Bethesda Game Studios, the studio behind iconic titles like Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, have officially formed a union. The group is joining the Communications Workers of America (CWA), marking a significant shift in labor organization within the Microsoft-owned developer.

Bethesda Game Studios employees form a ‘wall-to-wall’ union

This development represents the first “wall-to-wall” union at a Microsoft game studio. Unlike previous organizing efforts that focused on specific departments, this unit encompasses a wide range of job titles, including:

  • Engineers
  • Artists
  • Designers
  • Programmers

The CWA reports that the union represents 241 workers who have either signed union cards or expressed their intent to join through an online portal. Microsoft has opted for voluntary recognition of the group, a strategic step that bypasses the need for a formal election and moves the parties directly toward contract negotiations.

This move follows the successful unionization of quality assurance testers at ZeniMax, Bethesda’s parent company, which became Microsoft’s inaugural official union in the United States last year. The expansion reflects a broader trend of collective bargaining efforts gaining momentum across the global video game industry.

Mandi Parker, a senior system designer at the studio, highlighted the importance of this milestone. “We are so excited to announce our union at Bethesda Game Studios and join the movement sweeping across the video game industry,” Parker stated. “It is clear that every worker can benefit from bringing democracy into the workplace and securing a protected voice on the job.”

In response to the formation of the union, a Microsoft spokesperson reaffirmed the company’s position on labor relations. The representative stated that the firm supports “employees’ right to choose how they are represented in the workplace” and committed to engaging in “good faith negotiations with the CWA.” Further details on the announcement confirm that both parties are now preparing to discuss the terms of their professional agreement.
