Fitbit Ace LTE: New Smartwatch for Kids Focuses on Gaming

Fitbit is expanding its lineup of wearable devices for children with the introduction of the Ace LTE. Designed for users aged seven and older, the new smartwatch shifts away from traditional fitness metrics, prioritizing active play and gamification to encourage physical movement.

The device, which opens for preorders this Wednesday for $230, functions independently through a cellular connection. It incorporates motion-control technology reminiscent of classic gaming consoles, allowing children to unlock 3D games and interact with digital pets known as “Eejies” by staying active throughout the day.

Gamification and Digital Wellbeing

The “Eejies” serve as virtual companions that thrive on the child’s physical activity. Completing movement goals rewards users with “arcade tickets,” which can be redeemed for virtual items like clothing and furniture for their pets. Fitbit plans to keep the experience fresh by updating the Fitbit Arcade with new games every few months.

To ensure healthy habits, the device includes limits on rewards, preventing excessive use. The company stated that it collaborated with independent experts in child psychology, public health, and digital wellbeing to ensure the product remains safe and helpful for its target demographic.

Privacy and Parental Controls

Data privacy remains a core focus for the Google-owned company. Fitbit has implemented several safeguards for the Ace LTE:

  • Location data is accessible exclusively through the parent or guardian’s app and is deleted after 24 hours.
  • Activity data storage is capped at 35 days, after which it is automatically erased.
  • Social interactions, such as adding friends, require in-person confirmation and parental approval.

The Ace LTE requires a subscription service, priced at $10 per month or $120 for an annual plan. Shipping for the device is scheduled to begin on June 5.
