Gizmo Raises $22M to Scale AI Study App to 13M Users
Gizmo, the AI-driven study platform that converts student notes into interactive learning tools, has secured $22 million in Series A funding. This capital injection arrives as the company reports a rapid surge in its user base, now reaching over 13 million learners across more than 120 countries.
The platform, which launched in 2021, has seen exponential growth since 2023, when its user count stood at approximately 300,000. According to CEO Petros Christodoulou, the new funding will prioritize the expansion of the company’s engineering and AI divisions, alongside a strategic push into the U.S. college market. The startup currently plans to grow its headcount from seven employees to roughly 30.
Gamification as a Strategy for Engagement
As academic performance in the U.S. reaches historic lows, according to the 2025 National Assessment of Educational Progress, startups are facing mounting pressure to combat reduced attention spans. With young learners increasingly habituated to the fast-paced nature of platforms like TikTok and YouTube, Gizmo is positioning itself as an addictive alternative for education.

The app relies on game mechanics to maintain user interest, including:
- Leaderboards to encourage competition.
- Streaks to track consistent study habits.
- Limited daily lives to create stakes for incorrect answers.
- Social features that allow users to challenge friends.
The Competitive Landscape
While the edtech market is crowded with micro-learning tools like Yuno, Knowt, Anki, and Quizlet, Gizmo’s trajectory is notable. For context, while Knowt reports over 7 million users and Yuno claims 1 million downloads, Gizmo’s rapid climb to 13 million users in just a few years highlights a strong market appetite for its specific approach.
The Series A investment was led by Shine Capital. Additional participation included Ada Ventures, Seek Investments, GSV, and NFX, the latter of which previously led the company’s $3.5 million seed round.
