Disney Accuses Google of Massive AI Copyright Theft
The Walt Disney Company has issued a formal cease-and-desist letter to Google, asserting that the technology corporation is engaged in large-scale copyright infringement. The legal notice claims that Google’s artificial intelligence services are systematically reproducing and distributing protected Disney content without authorization.

According to the document obtained by Variety, Disney describes Google’s infrastructure as a “virtual vending machine.” The company argues that Google’s AI models are not only rendering copies of its intellectual property but are also actively branding these outputs with the Gemini logo, which Disney contends creates a false impression that the usage is officially endorsed or licensed.
AI Models Targeted
The alleged infringement spans a wide array of Disney’s most recognizable franchises. The legal filing specifically identifies unauthorized AI-generated content depicting characters and intellectual property from:
- Frozen
- The Lion King
- Moana
- The Little Mermaid
- Deadpool
Disney’s legal team characterized the unauthorized exploitation as a “massive scale” violation, citing the commercial distribution of images and videos that rely on their proprietary library.
Google’s Response
Google has not explicitly addressed the specific accusations of infringement. Instead, a company spokesperson highlighted the existing collaborative history between the two organizations and defended their broader approach to AI development.
“We have a longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship with Disney, and will continue to engage with them,” the spokesperson stated. The company further noted that it utilizes public data from the open web to train its AI models and maintains copyright management tools, such as Content ID for YouTube and Google-extended, to provide rights holders with control over their digital assets.
Strategic Shift in AI Partnerships
The confrontation with Google coincides with a major strategic pivot for Disney. On the same day the cease-and-desist was issued, the entertainment giant announced a $1 billion, three-year partnership with OpenAI. This deal grants the ChatGPT developer access to Disney’s intellectual property to integrate its iconic characters into the Sora AI video generation platform.
