Disney Partners With OpenAI to Bring Characters to Sora

The Walt Disney Company has entered a significant three-year partnership with OpenAI, marking a major shift in how the entertainment giant approaches generative artificial intelligence. As part of the agreement, Disney is making a $1 billion equity investment in the AI firm, securing a collaboration that will integrate its extensive library of intellectual property into the Sora video generator.

Disney signs deal with OpenAI to allow Sora to generate AI videos featuring its characters

Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed to CNBC that the deal includes approximately one year of exclusivity. Following this period, Disney maintains the flexibility to license its characters to other artificial intelligence providers. Beyond video generation, Disney will leverage OpenAI’s APIs to develop new internal products and consumer experiences, with planned applications for the Disney+ streaming service.

Expanding the Sora Creative Toolkit

Since its September launch, Sora has enabled users to generate short video content through text prompts. With this integration, users gain access to a vast catalog of over 200 characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, alongside associated props, costumes, vehicles, and settings. The capability will also extend to ChatGPT Images, allowing for the creation of visuals using similar assets.

The library of available assets includes:

  • Classic animation: Mickey Mouse, Ariel, Belle, Cinderella, and Simba.
  • Modern hits: Characters from Frozen, Encanto, Inside Out, Moana, Toy Story, Up, Zootopia, and Monsters, Inc.
  • Franchise icons: Figures from the Marvel and Star Wars universes, such as Captain America, Black Panther, Iron Man, Deadpool, Groot, Darth Vader, Han Solo, and various Stormtroopers.

Despite the breadth of this integration, Disney clarified that the agreement explicitly excludes the use of voice recordings or the likenesses of real-world talent.

Strategic Shift in AI Relations

This partnership arrives after a period of tension between Disney and the generative AI sector. The company previously initiated legal action against Midjourney regarding intellectual property rights and issued a cease-and-desist notice to Character.AI, demanding the removal of Disney-owned characters from its platform.

Regarding the new collaboration, Iger stated that the company intends to extend its storytelling reach through generative AI in a “thoughtful and responsible” manner that protects creators. Sam Altman, CEO and co-founder of OpenAI, described the deal as a model for how creative leaders and AI developers can innovate together.

“The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence marks an important moment for our industry,” Iger said. “Through this collaboration with OpenAI, we will thoughtfully and responsibly extend the reach of our storytelling through generative AI, while respecting and protecting creators and their works.”

Altman echoed this sentiment, noting that the agreement helps creative works reach new audiences while emphasizing the importance of respecting the creative process.
