X Chat Brings Back Voice Notes Feature

X is restoring the ability to send voice messages within its private messaging service, X Chat. The company confirmed late Wednesday that the feature is now live, marking a return of audio communication to the platform’s direct messaging system.

The functionality is available for both individual conversations and group chats. To use it, users simply tap the voice input icon located to the right of the text entry field. While the default method requires holding the button during recording, the interface also supports a hands-free option: pressing and holding the icon, then swiping up to lock the recording mode.

Improving the Standalone Experience

The reintroduction of Voice Notes aligns with the company’s broader strategy to position X Chat as a standalone application. By incorporating a feature that has become a standard expectation in rival messaging services, X aims to increase the utility and competitiveness of its dedicated chat platform.

This update serves as a response to user feedback, addressing frustration that followed the initial removal of voice messaging during the transition to the new chat architecture. The feature had been on the development roadmap since November, when the company first indicated that audio support would return to the platform.

Strategic Shifts for the “Everything App”

The move toward separate, dedicated apps signals a pivot from Elon Musk’s original vision of a single “everything app.” Beyond X Chat, the company is testing similar strategies with other services, such as X Money, which is also being evaluated as an independent application.

The current iteration of X Chat includes a suite of messaging tools:

• Message editing and deletion capabilities
• Screenshot notifications and blocking
• File sharing functionality
• Voice and video calling
• Self-destructing messages

Recent developments also include beta testing for the X Chat app on iOS. While the company maintains that these conversations feature end-to-end encryption, security researchers have noted that the service’s implementation remains distinct from protocols used by platforms like Signal.
