Nothing Phone (2a) Debuts at $349 as Brand’s Budget Entry

Nothing has officially unveiled the Phone (2a), its first device specifically engineered for the mid-tier and budget smartphone market. The handset, which follows a limited preview at a recent MWC after-party, enters the fray with a competitive starting price of $349.

Availability and Developer Access

While the device is available for preorder, access is restricted in the United States. Currently, the U.S. launch is limited to a developer program, allowing users to build third-party app integrations with the device’s signature back-panel lighting, known as the “Glyphs.” Nothing has confirmed that registration for the necessary API key opens on March 5, 2024.

Markets in the U.K. and India will see a more traditional consumer rollout. Pricing and configurations for these regions include:

• U.K.: £319 for the 8GB/128GB model and £319 for the 12GB/256GB variant.
• India: ₹23,999 for 8GB/128GB, ₹27,099 for 12GB/256GB, and an exclusive 12GB/256GB configuration priced at ₹25,999.

Hardware and Performance

The Phone (2a) departs from the Qualcomm Snapdragon architecture utilized in the company’s premium handsets. Instead, it features a customized MediaTek Dimensity 7200 Pro chipset. According to the manufacturer, this collaboration focuses on efficiency and speed, delivering several performance enhancements:

• Smart Clean: Increases UFS read/write speeds by 200% during prolonged use.
• Adaptive NTFS: Boosts file transfer speeds with Windows PCs by 100%.
• Power Management: Reduces energy consumption for specific components by up to 10%.

Design and Battery

The device retains the brand’s signature transparent aesthetic, though the Glyph interface has been streamlined to three lights located on the top of the rear panel. The camera system features dual 50-megapixel sensors, now repositioned to the center-back of the device.

Battery life receives a notable upgrade, with a 5,000 mAh capacity exceeding the 4,500 mAh and 4,700 mAh batteries found in the Phone (1) and Phone (2), respectively. The display remains consistent with the more premium Phone (2), offering a 6.7-inch screen with a 120Hz refresh rate.
