Sony PlayStation to Lay Off 900 Staff, Close London Studio
Sony Interactive Entertainment is reducing its global workforce by approximately 900 employees, representing an 8% cut across its PlayStation division. The restructuring, confirmed by the company on Tuesday, includes the complete closure of its London Studio in the United Kingdom.

Jim Ryan, the head of PlayStation, addressed the staff in a note explaining that the decision followed months of internal leadership reviews. Ryan stated that the company must shift its focus toward long-term sustainability to continue delivering high-quality experiences for the gaming community.
Impact on Global Studios and Operations
The workforce reductions are widespread, affecting teams across the Americas, Japan, and the EMEA and APAC regions. Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, confirmed that several prominent development houses are facing staff cuts, including:
- Insomniac Games
- Naughty Dog
- Guerrilla
- Firesprite
According to Hulst, these organizational changes mean that certain projects currently in development will be canceled as the company pivots its operational strategy.
Market Challenges and Industry Trends
This downsizing arrives shortly after Sony revised its financial outlook. Two weeks ago, the corporation reduced its sales forecast for the PlayStation 5, citing softening demand. The company now anticipates moving 21 million units this fiscal year, a downward adjustment from the initial projection of 25 million consoles.
The gaming sector has faced a wave of contraction recently. Sony’s announcement follows major workforce reductions at other industry giants, such as Microsoft, which cut 1,900 roles within its Xbox and Activision Blizzard divisions, and Unity, which trimmed 25% of its staff. These moves mirror broader trends in the technology sector, where companies including Google, Discord, Twitch, and PayPal have also implemented significant headcount reductions over the past month.
