Spotify to Increase US Subscription Prices Early 2025
Spotify is preparing to increase its subscription pricing in the United States during the first quarter of 2025, according to a report from the Financial Times. This adjustment follows a recent wave of price hikes implemented by the streaming giant across several international markets, including Australia, Switzerland, and the U.K.

Financial Impact and Market Pressure
The current monthly rate for a Spotify subscription in the U.S. is $11.99. Since the platform’s American debut 14 years ago, when it launched with a $9.99 monthly fee, the service has seen limited base price adjustments. Analysts at JPMorgan estimate that even a modest $1-per-month increase in the U.S. market could bolster Spotify’s annual revenue by approximately $500 million.
The decision to raise rates aligns with ongoing pressure from major record labels. These industry partners have consistently pushed for higher subscription fees, citing two primary concerns:
- Streaming costs have failed to keep pace with broader economic inflation.
- Subscription pricing remains significantly lower when compared to the tiered models of video streaming services like Netflix.
Leadership Transition
This strategic shift in pricing coincides with a major internal restructuring at the top of the company. Spotify recently announced that founder Daniel Ek is stepping down from his role as CEO. The company is transitioning to a co-CEO leadership model, appointing the following executives to lead the organization:
- Gustav Söderström: Previously serving as co-president and chief product and technology officer.
- Alex Norström: Previously serving as co-president and chief business officer.
The upcoming price increase marks the first time U.S. subscribers will see a change since July 2024, signaling a broader effort by the platform to optimize its financial performance under new leadership.
