Fortnite Returns to iOS in Europe via Epic Games Store
Four years after its high-profile removal from the App Store, Fortnite is officially slated for a return to iOS devices. The comeback is exclusive to European users and arrives as a direct result of new regulatory pressure on Apple.

Legislative Shifts Drive Platform Changes
The return of the battle royale title follows Apple’s decision to adjust its iOS operations within the European Union to align with the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This sweeping pro-competition legislation requires major tech companies to open their ecosystems to greater outside participation.
Under these new mandates, Apple is moving away from its long-standing “walled garden” model, which previously prohibited software distribution outside of the official App Store. Developers will now be permitted to:
- Utilize alternative distribution channels for their applications.
- Create and manage their own independent app marketplaces on iOS.
Epic Games Store Expansion
Epic Games intends to capitalize on these rules by launching its own mobile storefront on iOS. The company confirmed that the Epic Games Store will host the return of Fortnite later this year. This move aligns with Epic’s broader strategy to position itself as a software marketplace, similar to its existing operations on PC and Mac.
Epic’s current business model for its digital store takes a 13% revenue share, allowing developers to retain 88% of their earnings. This approach stands in contrast to the more aggressive commission structures historically maintained by Apple.
Ongoing Friction Between Tech Giants
Despite the functional opening of the platform, the relationship between the two companies remains volatile. Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney publicly characterized Apple’s proposed DMA compliance strategy as “malicious compliance,” labeling the company’s new fee structures as “hot garbage.”
The Evolution of Fortnite
The return to mobile coincides with a shift in how Fortnite operates. The title has transformed from a singular battle royale game into a broader digital ecosystem:
- It now functions as a portal for thousands of user-generated experiences.
- The platform has expanded to include survival, racing, and rhythm-based gaming modes.
- Epic is positioning the title to serve as a hub for diverse digital entertainment, mirroring the growth of platforms like Roblox.
