Netflix Games Surges 180% in 2023 Driven by GTA Titles

Netflix’s ambitious push into the gaming sector reached a significant milestone in 2023. According to data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, the streaming giant saw its annual game downloads climb by more than 180% compared to the previous year. This growth highlights a successful pivot for a company that entered the space just over two years ago with a strategy focused on offering titles free of ads or in-app purchases.

The platform recorded 81.2 million global downloads across the App Store and Google Play throughout 2023. Momentum accelerated sharply toward the end of the year, with the fourth quarter alone accounting for approximately 53% of the total annual installs. For comparison, the company saw 28.7 million downloads in 2022 and 5.2 million in 2021.

The Impact of Grand Theft Auto

A major catalyst for this year-end surge was the late-2023 release of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) trilogy. Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas quickly became the streamer’s most-downloaded game of all time and set a record for the most downloads in a single month for the platform, as reported by Appfigures. Combined, GTA: San Andreas, Vice City, and GTA III generated over 6.4 million downloads within their first week of availability, representing roughly 17% of Netflix’s total gaming downloads for the year.

Genre Performance and Strategy

While the GTA titles established “Action” as the top genre on the platform, Netflix’s catalog has successfully diversified. Other key contributors include:

  • Lifestyle: Driven by the Too Hot to Handle series, which accounted for half of the genre’s downloads.
  • Puzzle: Boosted by the title Storyteller, which launched in September 2023 and became the second-most popular game on the platform, driving 10% of total yearly downloads.

The company has moved beyond relying solely on tie-ins for its own hit shows. While titles like Stranger Things, The Queen’s Gambit, and Money Heist have been central to the strategy, popular licensed games such as SpongeBob: Get Cooking and Football Manager have also garnered millions of installs, proving that the service appeals to a broader range of gaming tastes.

Building for the Future

To sustain this growth, Netflix has been aggressive in its expansion. The company has acquired several studios, including Night School Studio, Spry Fox, Next Games, and Boss Fight Entertainment. Furthermore, it has established internal studios in Helsinki and Southern California, the latter led by former Blizzard executive Chacko Sonny.

Currently, the streaming giant is developing a high-budget, multi-platform game based on original intellectual property. This project involves industry veterans such as Chacko Sonny, Gavin Irby, Joseph Staten, Rafael Grassetti, and Jerry Edsall. With nearly 90 games currently in development, Netflix is positioning itself to expand its reach further into the gaming market throughout 2024.
