Google Translate brings real-time audio to iOS headphones
Google is extending its Live Translate capabilities, bringing AI-driven, real-time headphone interpretation to iOS devices and a significantly broader list of countries. The tool functions as a one-way translation bridge, allowing users to hear foreign speech converted directly into their preferred language through their existing headphones.
Global availability and supported devices
Previously restricted to Android users in the U.S., India, and Mexico, the feature is now rolling out to a wider international audience. The service is currently accessible on both iOS and Android in the following regions:
- United States, India, and Mexico
- Germany, Spain, France, and Italy
- United Kingdom, Japan, Bangladesh, Thailand, and Nigeria
The system supports more than 70 languages, making it a versatile tool for travelers or individuals navigating multilingual environments. Users can activate the feature by selecting the “Live Translate” option within the Google Translate app and pairing their headphones.
How the AI handles conversation
Powered by Google’s Gemini AI, the technology aims to preserve the nuance of human speech. According to the company, the processing maintains the speaker’s original tone, emphasis, and cadence. This focus on audio fidelity is intended to help listeners distinguish between speakers and follow the flow of dialogue more naturally.
Practical applications for the tool range from understanding transit announcements while abroad to participating in family dinners where multiple languages are spoken.
Concurrent expansion of Search Live
The update to Translate coincides with a global rollout for “Search Live,” Google’s conversational AI search tool. Originally launched in July 2025, Search Live is now expanding to over 200 countries and territories. The feature allows users to point their smartphone camera at objects to engage in back-and-forth AI assistance based on visual input. Users can access this by tapping the Live icon located beneath the search bar within the Google app on mobile devices.
