Amazon Launches AI-Powered Alexa+ in the UK

Amazon is expanding the reach of its conversational AI assistant, Alexa+, to the United Kingdom. This rollout marks the first time the advanced assistant has been made available to customers outside of North America.

Amazon brings Alexa+ to the UK

To facilitate the transition, the company has launched an early access program for UK residents. Customers who purchase a new Amazon Echo device are currently receiving invitations to test the features. Amazon anticipates granting access to hundreds of thousands of users over the coming weeks.

Pricing and Availability

While the early access phase is currently free for participants, Amazon has outlined the future subscription model for the service. Once the trial period concludes—though a specific end date remains unannounced—the structure will be as follows:

  • Prime Members: Access to Alexa+ will be included at no additional cost.
  • Non-Prime Users: The service will require a monthly subscription fee of £19.99.

Alexa+ is designed to function across Amazon’s Echo hardware, Fire TV, and the dedicated Alexa mobile application. A key feature of the system is its ability to maintain conversational context as users switch between these different devices, with plans already in motion to expand compatibility to web browsers.

Localized Engineering for British Users

Amazon emphasized that this version of Alexa+ has been specifically tailored for the UK market. According to a blog post from the company, teams at their Cambridge Tech Hub—comprised of linguists, speech scientists, and engineers—have refined the AI to handle local nuances.

The development process utilized accent-neutral speech representations, regional embeddings, and reinforcement learning. These technical adjustments allow the assistant to better interpret British regional dialects and commonly used local phrases.

Features and Ecosystem Integration

Beyond standard queries, the assistant integrates with several UK-based services to provide actionable suggestions. Users can interact with platforms such as OpenTable, JustEat, and Treatwell, or request news updates from outlets including The Guardian, The Independent, Press Association, and Future Publishing.

The UK launch follows a gradual international expansion for the AI, which was first unveiled in February 2025. After an initial rollout in the United States—where it reached over a million users by June—and subsequent early access launches in Mexico and Canada, the service has recently gained new customization options. These include personality settings and a “Sassy” mode, though Amazon confirmed that the system maintains strict filters against NSFW content.
