Roblox Acquires Speechly to Bolster Voice Chat Moderation

Roblox has officially acquired Speechly, a Helsinki-based startup specializing in voice technology and real-time moderation. The move marks a significant step for the gaming giant as it seeks to scale its safety infrastructure alongside the rapid expansion of voice-based interactions within its virtual environments.

Speechly, founded in 2016, built its reputation on developing AI-powered tools capable of transcribing and moderating voice communication in real time. By integrating this technology, Roblox aims to address the persistent challenge of toxic behavior in online spaces. Research conducted by the startup previously highlighted that while 70% of gamers engage in voice chat, roughly 72% report having encountered toxic incidents.

Scaling Safety for Immersive Experiences

The acquisition arrives as Roblox shifts from traditional text-based communication toward more natural, voice-integrated interactions. The company has already begun rolling out features such as avatar-based voice calls, which incorporate facial motion tracking to simulate life-like conversations. These updates are central to the company’s strategy of attracting an older demographic, specifically users aged 17 and up.

Hannes Heikinheimo, co-founder and CTO of Speechly, emphasized the alignment between the two companies in a blog post regarding the transition:

Before the acquisition, Speechly had secured $7.53 million in outside capital, according to Pitchbook data. The startup, which was backed by Y Combinator, had also achieved SOC 2 Type II certification, a standard that ensures rigorous security and privacy protocols for client data handling. This certification likely played a role in making the company a prime target for acquisition.

While the financial terms of the deal remain confidential, the integration of Speechly’s Voice API and transcription capabilities positions Roblox to move beyond basic moderation tools. The startup’s technology is widely considered more sophisticated than several existing market alternatives, providing a robust framework for managing the dynamic nature of voice communication in virtual worlds.
