Google Integrates Gemini AI Across Workspace Apps
Google has unveiled a significant expansion of Gemini AI capabilities across its Workspace suite, aiming to transform Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Drive from passive storage and editing platforms into active, intelligent collaborators. These updates, announced Tuesday, allow users to execute complex tasks directly within their workflow without needing to pivot to external chatbots.
The core of this update is the “Help me create” tool in Google Docs. By providing a natural language prompt, users can instruct Gemini to pull information from Gmail, Chat, and Drive to generate fully formatted first drafts. For instance, a user can request a newsletter based on specific meeting minutes and upcoming events, with subsequent features allowing for granular refinements or tonal adjustments using “Help me write” and “Match writing style.”
Enhancing Sheets and Slides
In Google Sheets, Gemini now functions as a collaborative partner capable of organizing data from across a user’s ecosystem. The “Fill with Gemini” tool allows for rapid table population, including the ability to pull real-time information from Google Search to categorize or summarize data, such as tracking college application deadlines or tuition costs.
Google Slides is receiving similar attention, with the ability to generate editable slides that align with a user’s existing presentation theme. Future iterations will enable the creation of entire slide decks from a single prompt, allowing for quick adjustments to style or formatting through simple conversational commands.
Intelligent Search in Drive
Google Drive is also evolving, moving beyond file storage to become an active research assistant. New features include:
- AI Overviews: When searching in Drive, Gemini provides a summary of relevant information from files, citing sources to eliminate the need to manually open multiple documents.
- Ask Gemini in Drive: This tool allows users to pose complex, cross-platform questions—such as inquiries regarding tax documents—that synthesize data from calendar entries, emails, and documents.
These features are currently rolling out in beta for Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. The enhancements for Docs, Sheets, and Slides are available in English globally, while the Drive integration is initially limited to U.S. users.
