ElevenLabs Debuts Music v2 with Genre-Shifting AI
ElevenLabs has unveiled Music v2, an upgraded generative model that allows creators to transition between disparate musical genres within a single track. This release arrives ten months after the company’s initial foray into AI-driven music production, promising enhanced control over vocal complexity and composition.

The updated system introduces granular editing capabilities, enabling users to isolate specific segments of a song for re-creation via text prompts without impacting the rest of the composition. This modular approach allows for the construction of full songs by stitching together distinct sections such as intros, verses, and choruses.
Advanced Capabilities and Flexibility
According to ElevenLabs, the model demonstrates significant improvements in linguistic coherence and arrangement stability. Key features of the new iteration include:
- Seamless Genre Transitions: The ability to shift styles—such as moving from operatic arrangements to heavy metal—within one piece.
- Enhanced Vocal Performance: Improved delivery of rapid rap segments while maintaining rhythmic and lyrical coherence.
- Sound Design Integration: Support for incorporating non-musical sound effects directly into the audio track.
The release is part of a broader industry push toward professional-grade AI music generation. Competitors such as Google, with its Flow Music tool, and Suno have recently introduced similar features, including section-based editing and cover generation.
Commercial Licensing and Legal Standing
A primary differentiator for ElevenLabs is its emphasis on copyright compliance. The company stated that Music v2 is trained on licensed data, clearing the output for commercial use. This stance is particularly relevant as the industry faces ongoing legal scrutiny regarding training practices.
Startups like Suno and Udio have been embroiled in high-profile litigation involving major record labels over the use of copyrighted material in model training. By prioritizing cleared data, ElevenLabs aims to provide a safer environment for branding and marketing teams.
The new model is currently accessible through the ElevenCreative tool and the recently launched ElevenMusic platform, with plans to integrate these capabilities into the ElevenAPI in the near future.
