The landscape of RSS readers has long been dominated by the “inbox” paradigm: a list of unread items that demands to be cleared. A new application, Current, is challenging this design philosophy by treating information as a fluid stream rather than a series of obligations.

Developer Terry Godier designed the app to alleviate the “social debt” often felt when users return to a feed reader after several days away. By removing the traditional unread counts and bolded text common in email clients, Current aims to make RSS consumption more approachable for casual readers.

A Dynamic “River” of Content

The core of the application is a “river” interface where content appears, remains for a set duration based on its type, and eventually fades away. This design removes the pressure to reach “Inbox Zero.”

• Evergreen Tutorials: Visible for 1 week.

Users can interact with these items by swiping left to dismiss them or by using the release button after finishing an article, which returns the reader to the stream.

Advanced Features for Feed Enthusiasts

Beyond the river interface, the app includes several tools for power users. It can fetch full article text from sites that truncate their feeds and offers a dedicated mode for webcomics. Intelligence features also suggest muting or rate-limiting sources that frequently flood the feed, as well as pinning favorite sites.

The “Voices” feature allows users to follow specific writers rather than just publications, a concept supported by Godier’s Byline specification. This allows for a more personalized feed filtered by individual contributors.

Current is currently available on the Apple App Store for iOS, iPad, and Mac as a one-time purchase of $9.99, with no subscriptions or in-app purchases. The app supports OPML import and iCloud Sync, with a web-based version planned for the future.
