Claude Hits Top 10 on App Store After Super Bowl Ad Blitz

Anthropic’s mobile application has experienced a significant surge in popularity following a high-profile marketing campaign during the Super Bowl. The Claude chatbot, which previously struggled to gain traction compared to competitors, climbed into the top 10 on the U.S. App Store by Friday, reaching its highest ranking to date at No. 7.

Download Metrics and Market Impact

Market intelligence firm Appfigures reported a sharp uptick in interest for the AI tool. Key performance data includes:

  • U.S. Downloads: Approximately 148,000 installs across iOS and Android from Sunday through Tuesday.
  • Growth Rate: A 32% increase compared to the previous three-day period (Thursday through Saturday), which saw 112,000 downloads.
  • Daily Average: Users downloaded the app at a rate of 49,200 per day during the post-Super Bowl window, up from the typical average of 37,400.

Strategic Positioning

The campaign featured darkly comedic spots portraying individuals seeking AI assistance, only to be misdirected by other chatbots toward questionable services like “cougar” dating sites or height-boosting insoles. This creative angle served to emphasize Claude’s “no ads” promise, which appears to have resonated with users.

The timing of this growth coincides with OpenAI’s decision to introduce advertisements to its free users, providing Anthropic with a clear opening to differentiate its product. Additionally, the release of the new Opus 4.6 model has likely contributed to the increased visibility.

Comparison to Mobile Debut

The current momentum stands in stark contrast to the app’s launch in May 2024. At that time, Claude saw a lukewarm reception, gathering 157,000 global downloads in its first week and peaking at No. 55 on the U.S. App Store. By comparison, ChatGPT had already secured nearly half a million installs in its first five days on mobile.

While global downloads for Claude also saw a 15% increase in the same post-Super Bowl timeframe, the growth was significantly more pronounced in the United States, according to Appfigures.
