Snapchat Expands Location Alerts Beyond Home
Snapchat is broadening its safety and coordination tools by introducing “Arrival Notifications.” The update allows users to automatically alert friends or family members when they reach specific locations, moving beyond the platform’s existing “Home Safe” feature.
Announced this Monday, the functionality is designed to automate status updates for recurring events or travel. According to the company’s official blog post, users can now configure alerts for various destinations—such as a gym, a weekly class, or a meeting—without the manual effort of sending a text message upon arrival.
How the Feature Works
To implement these alerts, users must first be sharing their location with a specific friend on the platform. Once that connection is established, the setup process involves:
- Opening the friendship profile of the person you wish to notify.
- Selecting the “Arrival Notifications” option.
- Pinning a location on the map and assigning it a custom label (e.g., “Piano lessons” or “Run club”).
- Choosing between a one-time alert or recurring notifications.
Snapchat emphasizes that privacy remains a priority. Location sharing on Snap Map is disabled by default, and users retain full control over who can track their whereabouts. For one-time alerts, the notification expires immediately after being sent or within 24 hours.

Snap Map, which debuted in 2017 as a simple way to view friend locations and public content, has evolved into a utility for discovering local hotspots.
