India App Downloads Hit 25.5 Billion in 2025 Surge
India solidified its position as a global leader in mobile engagement during 2025, with total app downloads rebounding to 25.5 billion. This growth marks a significant recovery following a dip to 24.6 billion in 2024, according to the latest data from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

The resurgence in download volume was mirrored by a significant increase in user engagement. Total time spent within applications surged to 1.23 trillion hours in 2025, up from 1.13 trillion hours the previous year.

The AI and Microdrama Boom
The shift in consumer behavior is largely attributed to the rapid adoption of two specific categories: generative AI and short-form video dramas. AI assistant applications saw a massive surge, recording 602 million downloads in 2025, compared to 198 million in 2024.
- Generative AI: ChatGPT led the segment, followed by Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Grok. Competitive pricing, with many firms offering free access to premium plans, accelerated this growth.
- Microdramas: This entertainment format gained significant traction, with downloads growing by over 350 million.

Prominent players in the microdrama space include Kuku TV, Story TV, QuickTV, and DashReels. By the end of the third quarter of 2025, Indian users were downloading more short-drama content than traditional OTT streaming services like Netflix or JioHotstar. Industry analysts suggest this sector could reach a valuation in the tens of billions by 2030.

Domestic Market Dynamics
While India continues to lead in total downloads, it remains outside the top 20 markets for consumer spending. The share of downloads from domestic publishers increased from 33.91% to 36.52% in 2025.
Experts note that this uptick in local app downloads is largely driven by utility-focused categories, such as finance, government services, and ultra-fast commerce, rather than entertainment. Consequently, the revenue share from in-app purchases among domestic developers has remained relatively stagnant.
