These so-called “micro apps” or “fleeting apps” are designed to solve specific, temporary problems—ranging from restaurant recommendations to chore tracking—and are often discarded once their utility expires.

The trend is driven by the accessibility of AI tools like Claude, ChatGPT, Replit, Bolt, and Lovable. Rather than purchasing subscription-based software, users are increasingly “vibe coding” their own solutions, transforming how people interact with digital tools in their daily lives.

The logic behind fleeting apps

Legand L. Burge III, a professor of computer science at Howard University, describes these tools as hyper-specific software that functions similarly to social media trends: they appear to address a niche need and fade away when that need is no longer present. The shift marks a departure from traditional app development, which typically focuses on wide distribution and long-term monetization.

Examples of this behavior are diverse:

  • Dining Decisions: Rebecca Yu spent seven days building “Where2Eat” to settle group indecision about restaurant choices.
  • Holiday Gaming: Founder Jordi Amat developed a web game for his family to play during the holidays, shutting it down immediately after the vacation ended.
  • Health Monitoring: Software engineer James Waugh built a logger for a friend to track heart palpitations, while media strategist Hollie Krause created an allergy-tracking app after dissatisfaction with existing medical software.
  • Personal Tracking: One artist designed a “vice tracker” to monitor his weekend consumption of drinks and hookah.

Shifting the software paradigm

While web apps remain the primary focus due to their ease of deployment, the mobile landscape is also evolving. Startups like Anything and VibeCode have secured millions in funding to help users navigate the complexities of building and running mobile applications, which typically face higher barriers due to Apple’s App Store requirements.

Christina Melas-Kyriazi, a partner at Bain Capital Ventures, believes this era mirrors the explosion of content creators and online sellers seen in the early days of social media and platforms like Shopify. She envisions personal, fleeting apps eventually occupying the space between simple spreadsheets and full-scale enterprise products.

Challenges and future outlook

Despite the excitement, the movement faces hurdles. Currently, building and maintaining custom code can be time-consuming and costly, particularly for those relying on multiple subscription services. Furthermore, these personal apps often lack the security and bug-testing rigor required for public release.

However, industry observers see significant potential as AI reasoning and security features mature. Darrell Etherington, a vice president at SBS Comms, suggests a future where individuals move away from monthly software subscriptions entirely, opting instead to build bespoke tools for their own specific workflows.

For users like Krause, who hosted her household apps on Tiiny.host, the impact is already tangible. “I truly think that vibe coding means I can help people,” she said, noting her plans to eventually refine her allergy app for use by other caregivers.
