Meta Discontinues Facebook Messenger Desktop App

Meta has officially ended support for the Facebook Messenger desktop application. As of December 15, 2025, the native software for both Mac and Windows is no longer operational, forcing users to transition to the browser-based experience.

The shutdown follows a long period of declining utility for the standalone tool, which first gained prominence during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its initial popularity, the application struggled to compete with business-focused communication platforms, lacking key features like native screen sharing, shareable URLs, and the capacity to host large video conferences.

A Shift in Strategy

The move to sunset the desktop version aligns with Meta’s broader efforts to reintegrate Messenger into its core Facebook ecosystem, a process that began in 2023. By pulling the messaging service back into the main platform, the company appears focused on consolidating engagement within its flagship social network.

Technical challenges also plagued the app’s development lifecycle. The Mac version relied on Apple’s Catalyst technology—designed to port iPad apps to desktop—which frequently drew criticism for failing to provide a truly native user experience. Prior to this, the software underwent several architecture changes, including a stint as an Electron app and a later migration to React Native Desktop, according to a former Meta engineer.

Meanwhile, the Windows version had already transitioned to a progressive web app (PWA) last year, further signaling that a dedicated standalone program was no longer a priority for Meta’s engineering teams.

What Users Need to Know

• Web Transition: All users are now being redirected to the Facebook website or Messenger.com to continue their conversations.
• Account Access: Those who previously used the standalone app without a Facebook account can continue to log in via Messenger.com without being required to create a full social media profile.
• Data Preservation: Meta had previously advised users to set up a PIN to secure their chat history before the final shutdown date.
