Snapchat Launches 2025 Recap as User Storage Backlash Grows

Snapchat rolls out its end-of-year Recaps

Snapchat is joining the annual year-in-review trend by rolling out personalized 2025 Recaps to its global user base. The feature compiles highlights from individual Snaps, Stories, and Chats into a short video, allowing users to revisit their most frequent connections and digital expressions throughout the year. The content is now available within the “Memories” section of the app via a dedicated “Your 2025 Snap Recap” card.

Data Insights: How Users Communicated in 2025

Beyond the personal highlights, the company disclosed platform-wide metrics that challenge the notion that traditional voice communication is fading. Key statistics from the past year include:

  • Voice and Audio: Users averaged nearly 1.7 billion minutes of phone calls per day, reflecting a 30% increase compared to the previous year. Additionally, voice note usage in the U.S. climbed by nearly 10%, totaling over five billion sent notes.
  • Group Interaction: Engagement in group chats saw a steady rise, with the number of people messaging in groups growing by more than 5%. Some high-frequency users recorded over 8,880 messages within their most active group chat.
  • Reaction Trends: The use of Chat Reactions surged by 44%, with the heart emoji emerging as the most frequently used symbol. Sticker usage also saw an uptick, with three million more people incorporating them into their daily communication.

This rollout aligns the platform with other major digital services, such as Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Duolingo, which have already debuted their respective annual retrospectives.

Controversy Over Storage Policy Changes

The arrival of the 2025 Recap comes at a tense moment for the platform. A segment of the user base has organized boycotts and expressed vocal opposition regarding the company’s decision to limit free cloud storage. As announced in September, free access to Memories will be capped at 5GB, requiring users who exceed this limit to move to paid subscription tiers.

The tiered storage options introduced by the company include:

  • Introductory Plan: 100GB of storage for $1.99 per month.
  • Snapchat+ Subscription: 250GB of storage for $3.99 per month.
  • Snapchat Platinum: 5TB of storage for $15.99 per month.

Despite the backlash and calls for reconsideration from the community, the platform is moving forward with the new monetization strategy as it seeks to balance user engagement with infrastructure costs.
