OpenAI Integrates ChatGPT Voice Directly Into Main Chat

OpenAI is streamlining the user experience for its flagship AI chatbot, removing the need to switch to a dedicated interface to engage in spoken conversations. As of Tuesday, ChatGPT Voice is being integrated directly into the main chat window, allowing for a more fluid interaction between verbal communication and visual data.

Previously, initiating a voice session with the chatbot forced users into a isolated screen dominated by an animated blue circle. This design restricted users to audio-only interaction, making it impossible to see text transcripts or reference visual content—such as images or maps—without exiting the voice mode entirely. This limitation often caused frustration if a user missed a specific detail and needed to revert to text to verify the information.

Enhanced Multimodal Interaction

The updated interface changes how users consume AI responses. By keeping the chat window active during voice calls, the platform now allows for:

• Real-time observation of text responses as they are generated.
• Reviewing historical messages while the conversation is ongoing.
• Viewing shared visuals, including maps and images, simultaneously with audio output.

Availability and Customization

This official update is currently rolling out to all users on both web and mobile platforms. While the integrated experience now serves as the default, OpenAI has retained the option for those who prefer the legacy interface.

Users can revert to the previous functionality by navigating to the “Voice Mode” section within their “Settings” menu, where a toggle for “Separate mode” remains available. To transition back to text input during a voice conversation in the new layout, users simply need to tap the “end” button.
