WhatsApp is introducing a revamped version of its “About” status, bringing a functionality to the messaging platform that closely mirrors Instagram Notes. This update enables users to share short, temporary text snippets directly within their profiles and chat headers.
While the concept may feel like a modern addition, Meta notes that this functionality marks a return to the app’s origins. In its earliest iteration, before the platform pivoted primarily to encrypted, private messaging, WhatsApp allowed users to display brief status updates to their contacts. This relaunch modernizes that legacy feature for current users.
How the New Status Works
The updated “About” feature is designed to increase visibility and interaction. Unlike the previous, static version, these updates are now prominently displayed at the top of individual chat windows and user profiles. Key functionalities include:
- Direct Interaction: Users can tap on a contact’s status within a chat to send a direct reply.
- Custom Timers: By default, statuses disappear after 24 hours, but users have the flexibility to adjust the duration to expire sooner or remain visible for longer periods.
- Privacy Controls: The platform offers granular settings, allowing users to restrict visibility to their contacts or open the status to a wider audience.
The company suggests the feature serves as a versatile tool for communication, whether users want to signal their current availability, share what they are doing, or provide a simple conversation starter. According to WhatsApp, the rollout for mobile devices begins this week.
Future Potential
Currently, the WhatsApp version is more streamlined than Instagram Notes, which offers additional capabilities such as short, looping video clips and integrations for sharing streaming music.
