YouTube Tests AI-Powered Search for Guided Results
YouTube is launching an experimental search tool designed to provide users with direct, guided answers. By leveraging artificial intelligence, the platform now aims to deliver comprehensive results that combine text summaries with specific video segments, moving beyond a simple list of video links.
This new function, currently being tested under the name “Ask YouTube,” allows users to input complex queries—such as requests for travel itineraries or recipe instructions—and receive structured, step-by-step guidance. Instead of forcing viewers to scan through multiple long-form videos to find specific information, the AI organizes the response using a blend of text, short clips, and extended video content.

How the AI Search Works
The system is designed to be interactive, supporting follow-up questions to refine search results. For instance, after generating a road trip plan, a user can immediately ask for specific recommendations, such as local coffee shops, and receive relevant suggestions in the same integrated format.
Key features of this experimental tool include:
- Multimodal Results: A curated mix of text, short-form, and long-form video content.
- Creator Discovery: Results display titles and channel details, helping users identify and connect with new creators.
- Interactive Follow-ups: The ability to refine or expand on an initial query without starting a new search.
The feature is currently limited to Premium subscribers in the U.S. who are 18 years of age or older. Those eligible must manually opt into the trial via the YouTube experimental features page. While access is restricted for now, Google has indicated plans to eventually roll out the tool to non-Premium users as well.
Expanding Google’s AI Ecosystem
This development aligns with Google’s broader strategy to integrate AI-driven search across its various platforms. Over the past year, the company has aggressively expanded its “AI mode” capabilities, including support for multi-part questions, side-by-side web browsing, and price comparison tools. The integration of Gemini’s Canvas feature last month further highlights the company’s focus on maintaining project continuity within its AI interfaces.
Industry analysts suggest that by refining how users interact with video content through AI, Google may eventually open new avenues for surfacing different types of video assets, potentially including integrated sponsored placements within these guided search answers.
