Apple Upgrades Shortcuts With AI Integration in iOS 27

Apple is transforming its visual-scripting platform, Shortcuts, by integrating advanced AI capabilities. Unveiled at the WWDC 2026 event, the upcoming iOS 27 update introduces a natural language interface designed to simplify the creation of complex automated tasks.

Historically, the Shortcuts app has been a tool primarily for power users capable of navigating multi-app actions and intricate variables. With the new release, the barrier to entry is significantly lowered. Users will be able to simply type a prompt describing their desired outcome, and Apple Intelligence will handle the technical heavy lifting.

Streamlining Complex Workflows

During the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote on Monday, Cecilia Dantas, senior manager of Home Software Product Marketing, acknowledged the historical friction in the app. “While super powerful, the process of creating these shortcuts can feel, well, complicated,” Dantas noted.

The integration of Apple Intelligence allows the system to interpret natural language requests and translate them into specific system and app actions. This shift enables users with no technical background to build sophisticated automations without manual configuration.

Practical Examples of AI Automation

To demonstrate the capability of this update, Apple provided a clear use case for everyday life:

• Automated Commute Alerts: Users can request a shortcut that triggers when they leave the office.
• Dynamic Calculations: The system accesses stored work addresses and utilizes Apple Maps to calculate an estimated time of arrival (ETA).
• Integrated Communication: The shortcut automatically sends a notification via Messages to a designated contact.
• Iterative Customization: If a user wants to expand the workflow, they can simply describe the change—such as adding a command to start a favorite podcast—and the AI will incorporate it into the existing sequence.

By removing the need to manually hunt for app actions or manage complex variables, Apple intends to make automation a feature accessible to all iPhone users. The updated Shortcuts experience is scheduled to launch alongside iOS 27 later this fall.
