Apple Overhauls Image Playground With New AI Capabilities
Apple is significantly upgrading its Image Playground tool, aiming to resolve long-standing quality issues that previously left the built-in AI generator trailing behind industry competitors. The company unveiled these enhancements during the WWDC 2026 keynote on Monday, positioning the tool as a core component of its broader Apple Intelligence rollout.
The updated tool introduces a more intuitive workflow, allowing users to generate and modify images through natural language prompts. Apple Senior Director Leslie Ikemoto highlighted the new capabilities, emphasizing that the system now supports advanced creative tasks, such as incorporating specific people from a user’s Photos library into generated scenes.
Ikemoto detailed several key features of the revamped tool:
- Contextual Editing: Users can iterate on designs, such as adding candles to a cake or changing clothing on subjects, using simple text commands.
- Flexible Formatting: The tool now supports custom aspect ratios, allowing users to toggle between landscape for websites or portrait for flyers.
- System-Wide Integration: Generated assets can be utilized across the OS for lock screens, iMessage backgrounds, and contact posters.
Privacy remains a central pillar of the announcement. Ikemoto noted that the new features leverage private cloud compute, ensuring that user photos are not stored or shared, even with Apple. This approach contrasts with several competitors in the AI space that have faced scrutiny for using user-generated content to train their models.
