Apple Photos App Gains New Generative AI Editing Tools

Apple unveiled a suite of generative AI capabilities for its Photos app during the WWDC 2026 keynote this Monday. The update integrates Apple Intelligence to provide users with advanced tools for adjusting perspective, expanding compositions, and removing unwanted elements from their images.

Spatial Reframe and Extend

Among the most notable additions is the “Reframe” feature. This tool allows users to shift the perspective of a photo as if they had physically repositioned the camera during the shoot. By dragging the image, users can fix composition errors—such as a sign looming over a subject’s head or a lack of symmetry—in real time. As the user adjusts the frame, the edges of the image become blurred, with Apple’s generative models filling in the gaps to ensure the final result remains consistent with the original scene.

Complementing the Reframe tool is the new “Extend” function. This feature enables users to expand the boundaries of an image, providing more space around subjects or allowing for the straightening of crooked horizons without the need to crop out essential details. Users can interact with this tool by pinching to zoom out or manually adjusting the crop settings.

Upgraded Cleanup Tool

The Photos app is also refining its “Cleanup” feature, which allows users to remove unwanted distractions from their pictures. By tapping, brushing, or circling objects, users can now benefit from higher-quality generative infill, resulting in a more seamless and realistic look when items are erased from the frame.
