Apple Overhauls Parental Controls for iOS 27
Apple unveiled a comprehensive suite of enhanced parental controls during its WWDC 2026 keynote, aiming to give guardians deeper oversight of how children interact with iPhones. The update, arriving this fall with iOS 27, shifts the focus toward more granular restrictions on web navigation, application access, and contact management.
The redesign comes as tech companies face mounting pressure to address the mental health impacts of digital devices on minors. By integrating expert guidance—including consultations with the American Academy of Pediatrics—Apple is moving beyond simple time-limit scheduling to offer more nuanced safeguards.
Key Safety Features
- Ask to Browse: A new web-filtering tool for Safari that allows parents to restrict which websites children can visit, extending across iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
- Media Filtering: Beyond detecting nudity, the system can now block incoming text messages containing gore or violent imagery.
- Contact Approval: Parents gain explicit control over which individuals can be added to a child’s contact list.
- Smart Onboarding: When setting up a new device, the system suggests age-appropriate app configurations and restrictions by default, specifically flagging social media as unsuitable for those under 13.
For parents of younger children, these tools offer a path to introduce technology gradually. Instead of providing full access to all device capabilities, guardians can now authorize only essential applications, expanding access over time as they deem appropriate.
Apple is also providing developers with a new set of APIs. These allow third-party apps to integrate natively with Apple’s parental controls, enabling features like age-verification checks, mandatory contact approval, and automated detection of prohibited content within their own environments.
The updated Screen Time interface has been streamlined to provide a clearer overview of device usage, allowing parents to adjust permissions with a single tap. Existing features, such as “Ask to Buy,” remain in place, with core restrictions enabled by default for users under the age of 13.
