Apple Vision Pro Chief Paul Meade Moves to OpenAI

Paul Meade, the Apple vice president overseeing the Vision Pro headset, is departing the company to join the hardware division at OpenAI. The move, first reported by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, marks a significant change for Apple’s wearable technology roadmap.

Internal Shifts and Hardware Strategy

Beyond the Vision Pro, Meade held a key role in developing Apple’s upcoming AI-powered smart glasses, slated for release next year. While the premium Vision Pro headset has struggled to gain broad market traction, Apple views these future smart glasses as a critical piece of its strategy to challenge Meta’s dominance in the wearable space.

The departure is linked to broader organizational changes occurring under John Ternus, who is poised to become Apple’s next CEO. Reports indicate that Ternus has begun reorganizing the hardware engineering team, a process that has left several vice presidents feeling sidelined or demoted within the corporate hierarchy.

OpenAI’s Hardware Ambitions

For OpenAI, recruiting Meade signals a renewed push into physical hardware. The company is already collaborating with former Apple chief design officer Jony Ive on a specialized AI device. CEO Sam Altman has previously described this project as a “calm” alternative to the smartphone experience, though recent development reports have noted challenges in finalizing the device’s specifications.

As of now, both Apple and OpenAI have not provided official comments regarding the transition.
