Apple News+ Launches Emoji Game Featuring AI-Powered Puzzles
Apple is expanding its gaming catalog within the News+ subscription service, introducing a daily title that blends logic with wordplay. The new Emoji Game, launched in time for World Emoji Day, challenges players to decipher phrases using a combination of standard emojis and custom Genmoji generated by Apple Intelligence.
How the Emoji Game Works
The core objective is to complete daily puzzles in the fewest moves possible. Players are presented with blank spaces representing letters in a word or phrase, which must be filled by dragging the correct emoji into position. Because the game relies on abstract thinking, players may need to interpret emoji combinations to find the intended term.
Key features of the gameplay include:
- Perfect Scores: Users aim to finish the puzzle in exactly six moves.
- Dynamic Clues: If a player gets stuck, they can reveal a hint, though this costs one move.
- Competitive Leaderboards: Scores can be tracked against friends and the wider community.
- Genmoji Integration: The game utilizes Genmoji to bypass the limitations of the standard emoji keyboard, allowing for more specific visual cues.
Availability and Future Integration
The Emoji Game is available to subscribers in the U.S. and Canada on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. While users running iOS 18.4 or later can access the game immediately without an update, those on older software may need to adjust their settings. Looking ahead, Apple plans to allow users to challenge friends directly through the dedicated Games app in the upcoming iOS 26 release.
The puzzles themselves are developed in collaboration with GoComics (formerly The Puzzle Society) and curated by Apple’s in-house puzzle editors. This addition joins existing offerings like Crossword, Crossword Mini, Sudoku, and Quartiles, further positioning games as a key retention tool for the Apple News+ platform.
