Spotify Enters Gaming With ‘Happy Gilmore 2’ Mini-Golf

Spotify is branching into interactive gaming through a strategic partnership with Netflix. The music streaming giant has introduced a mini-golf experience designed to build anticipation for the debut of “Happy Gilmore 2,” which arrives on Netflix this Friday, July 25.

This initiative marks a significant shift for Spotify, as it is the first time the platform has collaborated with an external partner to integrate a gaming experience directly into its app. While Spotify has historically avoided the gaming sector, this promotional campaign serves as a high-profile test to gauge how its massive user base interacts with gamified content tied to pop culture.

How the Happy Gilmore 2 Tournament Works

Developed in collaboration with MiK Studio, the “Happy Gilmore 2 Tournament” is now live within the Spotify app. The gameplay is straightforward, requiring users to tap their devices to time their golf swings perfectly across three distinct holes.

The experience is designed to reward fans of the 1996 original film with several interactive elements:

  • Audio Integration: Users hear iconic clips from the movie upon completing each round.
  • Custom Playlists: The game generates a personalized “happy” music selection for the player.
  • Hidden References: Players can find Easter eggs throughout the course, including the alligator, Happy’s signature hockey stick, and his boots.
  • Social Sharing: After finishing the course, players can view the official film trailer and share their final scores and playlists on social media.

Spotify’s History with In-App Games

Although this is the platform’s first official corporate gaming partnership, it is not Spotify’s first foray into the medium. In 2023, the service previously launched a hidden feature titled “Eat This Playlist.” That game functioned as a variation of the classic arcade title Snake, allowing users to navigate a growing line through obstacles while listening to their own music collections.
