WordPress has officially unveiled a new way to utilize its publishing software: a private, browser-based workspace that operates entirely within your local environment. Known as my.WordPress.net, the service allows users to build and manage sites without the need for traditional hosting plans, domain registrations, or even creating an account.
This initiative leverages the underlying technology of WordPress Playground, transforming the platform into a permanent, personal space for private tasks. Unlike standard WordPress sites, these instances are not accessible via the public internet, as they are not designed for web traffic or content discovery.
A Local-First Approach to Publishing
Because the service binds your site directly to your browser, data is saved within local browser storage rather than a remote server. This creates several unique operational constraints and capabilities:
- Device Limitation: Sites are tied to the specific browser session and cannot be accessed across different devices.
- Storage Capacity: The platform offers approximately 100MB of storage, making it ideal for personal apps, journaling, or drafting rather than media-heavy sites.
- Migration Path: While private by default, users can move their sites to a dedicated WordPress host should they choose to make them public later.
- Flexibility: Users can reset their work with a single button or create temporary instances that clear automatically upon refreshing the browser.
AI Integration and Personal Tooling
The workspace includes an App Catalog featuring various tools powered by WordPress plug-ins, such as a personal CRM, an RSS reader, a bookmarking tool, and an AI-integrated workspace. By utilizing OpenAI integration and CLI apps, the environment allows users to leverage AI assistants to modify plug-ins or act as a personal knowledge base that remembers stored data.
This rollout aligns with the broader strategy of the WordPress AI team, established last year to prioritize developer-focused AI products.
