WhatsApp Launches Parent-Managed Accounts for Pre-Teens

WhatsApp is introducing a new tier of parent-supervised accounts tailored for users under the age of 13. The initiative aims to provide a secure messaging environment for children, responding to widespread demand from parents who want a reliable way to communicate with their pre-teen children.

To establish these accounts, guardians must authenticate the process by linking their device to the child’s device via a QR code. Once active, the parent gains oversight through a six-digit PIN, which secures all configuration settings and alerts.

Enhanced Parental Controls

The system provides automated notifications for specific activities, ensuring parents remain informed about their child’s digital interactions. Default alerts are triggered when the pre-teen adds, blocks, or reports a contact. Parents can further customize these monitoring features to receive updates on:

  • Changes to profile names or pictures.
  • New incoming chat requests.
  • Creation of or participation in group chats.
  • Activation of disappearing messages.
  • Deletion of contacts or chat histories.

Safety and Platform Restrictions

To maintain a focused experience, these managed accounts are restricted from accessing certain platform features, including Meta AI, Channels, and Status updates. Furthermore, the ability to enable disappearing messages for one-on-one conversations is disabled. Despite these limitations, the platform maintains its standard end-to-end encryption for all calls and messages.

Additional safety measures include a context card displayed when receiving messages from unknown numbers, which indicates the contact’s country and any mutual group memberships. To protect the user, images from unknown contacts are blurred by default, and chat requests—along with group invite links—are sequestered in a separate folder protected by the parent’s PIN.

Meta plans to initiate the rollout in select regions, with a broader expansion scheduled for the coming months. When a user reaches the age of 13, they will be notified that their account is eligible for conversion to a standard version, though the company intends to allow parents the option to postpone this transition by one year.
