Spotify launches ‘Reserved’ to give superfans ticket access

Spotify is taking a direct swing at ticket scalpers with the launch of “Reserved by Spotify,” a system designed to secure concert seats for an artist’s most dedicated listeners. The feature allows the streaming platform to identify top fans and hold two tour tickets for them before the general public sale begins.

Starting today, the service is available to Premium subscribers aged 18 and older in the United States. The initiative is currently limited to shows promoted by Live Nation, with transactions processed through Ticketmaster. Spotify confirmed it will not collect any additional fees on these ticket sales.

How Spotify identifies ‘Superfans’

To determine eligibility, Spotify analyzes various user behaviors, including streaming history and content sharing. The company has implemented monitoring tools to prevent users from “gaming” the system using bots or AI agents.

  • Background listening does not count toward eligibility.
  • The system verifies that the user is engaging with the app like a typical fan.
  • Geographic location is factored in to ensure the offer is relevant to the tour stop.

The artist Role Model is the first partner for this launch, coinciding with his upcoming tour. Eligible fans will begin receiving notifications today, allowing them to secure tickets starting June 23. While Role Model is the first to utilize the system, Spotify plans to expand the roster of artists and include smaller venues and international markets in the future.

The User Experience

Once identified as a top listener, fans will see a personalized offer on their Spotify Home screen. This interface allows them to:

  • Review upcoming tour dates.
  • Identify the specific Reserved ticket window.
  • Set reminders for when the purchase period opens.

Spotify acknowledges that demand will likely exceed supply, meaning not every superfan will receive an offer for every show. By creating this new reservation framework, the streamer aims to incentivize paid subscriptions while deepening user engagement. This move complements other recent live music efforts, such as the support for live performance videos on artist profiles.
